Golf Association stays positive
By: Guy P. Harrison

Like most sports on Grand Cayman, golf was hit hard by Hurricane Ivan’s passing four months ago. All Grand Cayman’s golf courses suffered major setbacks. Britannia is now open with limitations. The Links, Cayman’s only 18–hole course, is closed at least until April of next year, according to the Cayman Islands Golf Association (CIGA).

Bob Slatter, CIGA’s membership chairman, says the Cayman Islands golf scene is down but not out. There is plenty of reason for optimism, he says.

“The Links and Britannia will, as will all of Cayman, recover, rebuild and result in being better than before Ivan,” Slatter said. “CIGA, with the support of its members, will continue as the governing body of amateur golf in the Cayman Islands, conducting challenging and fun events for its members and participating in Caribbean and international events when able to.”

In the meantime, however, Slatter announced that the Jamaica Golf Association (JGA) has come forward to offer all CIGA members the opportunity to play 11 courses in Jamaica at JGA rates for the next six months.

Anyone interested in joining the Cayman Islands Golf Association may call Bob Slatter (945–5899 or 926–0368).
