Rains close in on Cayman
24 June 2010

Although it appears the Cayman Islands will escape experiencing the effects of a tropical cyclone that might form out of Invest 93L, heavy rains are still headed its way.

The tropical wave that became Invest 93L had already passed Jamaica Wednesday afternoon and was expected to move well south of Grand Cayman on Thursday.

However, the National Hurricane Center in Miami noted an elongated area of disturbed weather that extended from eastern Cuba and Jamaica eastward across Hispaniola to Puerto Rico.

The Hurricane Center noted that upper level winds remained conducive for slow development of the system as it moved westward or west-north-westward over the next two days. It gave the system a 30 per cent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone by Friday afternoon.

Cayman’s National Weather Service called for increasing cloudiness and showers on Thursday with more significant rain on Friday.

Friday’s forecast calls for moderate seas with wave heights of 3 to 5 feet, with gusty winds and rough seas around the heavy showers.

Should Invest 93L develop into a tropical storm, it would be named Alex.
