The Atlantic Hurricane Season's first named storm developed overnight in the southwestern Caribbean Sea.

Early Saturday, Tropical Storm Alex was moving in a west-northwesterly direction at eight miles per hour. Maximum sustained winds were measured at 40 miles-per-hour. Some strengthening was expected over the next 24 hours.

There was no direct threat to the Cayman Islands expected from TS Alex, but forecasters expected rough seas and wave heights of five to seven feet throughout the day Saturday on Grand Cayman. A small craft warning is in effect.

After days of meandering through the Caribbean Sea, the area of disturbed weather dubbed Invest 93L became the first tropical cyclone of 2010 when the National Hurricane Center in Miami designated it Tropical Depression 1 at 5pm Cayman time Friday.

Tropical Storm Alex has slowed its forward movement a bit, but landfall was still expected on the Yucatan Peninsula near the Belize border overnight Saturday or early Sunday.
