Rotary Sunrise prepares for International Literacy Day
8 September 2010

The Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Sunrise will distribute the 832 books on International Literacy Day, Wednesday 8 September.

The books were donated last month from the Festival at Sea – Children’s Book Donation, the latest effort by Blue World Travel. The agency has hosted a Caribbean Children’s Book Drive every year for nearly two decades in concert with a cruise chartered for African American travellers.

Rotary Sunrise was the group selected in the Cayman Islands to receive and distribute the books that Blue World Travel collected.

The Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Sunrise will hand over the books to George Town, North Side, and East End primary schools as part of the grand opening ceremony for the club’s latest community project, the new Cecile Crighton Spotts Newlands Community Park.

In addition to handing over those hundreds of books, the Sunrise club has arranged for Books & Books in Camana Bay to offer a 10 per cent discount on International Literacy Day purchases of any children’s books from 10am until 9pm.

Literacy Committee Rotary Sunrise members will also participate in a reading program for Year Three children at schools across Grand Cayman in celebration of International Literacy Day.

Rotary Sunrise was chartered in 2002 and has members who are mostly young professionals from Cayman and 24 other countries. They meet for breakfast at 7am on Wednesdays at the Grand Old House.
