Police: Dead man had info on Ming killing

Gunshots rang out in West Bay Wednesday night, killing a young man in what is believed to be a gang related incident.

It was the fifth killing in that district since the start of the year.

The victim was identified as 20-year-old Tyrone Burrell.

Witnesses reported multiple shots fired outside a home on Birch Tree Hill around 8.05pm Wednesday. However, police later said their information indicated only one shot had been fired.

When officers arrived they discovered the 20-year-old Burrell lying on the ground near a residence not moving or breathing. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No arrests were immediately reported. Police were conducting a wide search of the Birch Tree Hill Road area using the helicopter and armed ground units Thursday night.

Later in the evening, police were seen stopping cars on West Bay Road at the intersection of Raleigh Quay - the only way into or out of the district.

Wednesday night’s shooting happened in the same yard where Damion Ming was shot back in March. Police said Thursday afternoon that Burrell was known to be associated with people involved in gangs. Other sources informed the Caymanian Compass that Burrell had been an associate of Ming’s.

According to police, Burrell's mother had dropped him off for a party at the Birch Tree Hill Road location earlier that evening.

Police believe Burrell did have information relating to Ming’s killing, but he never took that information to the police and was never identified as a police witness.

“We believe that Tyrone did have valuable information related to the Damion Ming killing,” RCIPS Superintendent Marlon Bodden said Thursday afternoon.

Mr. Bodden added that if Burrell had gone to the police with his information “we may not be sitting here today talking about another wasted young life.” Mr. Bodden said Burrell would have been protected by the police.

Wednesday night’s violence was an unwelcome sight in West Bay district which saw four killings within two months earlier in the year.

Four-year-old Jeremiah Barnes’s shooting death in mid-February sparked a run of homicides that led to the deaths of Alrick Peddie, 25, Marcos Duran, 29, and Ming.

Since late March, however, gun related violence in the district had dropped off sharply.

From March through September, the Islands saw only one other shooting death.

That incident involved a homeowner firing on a burglary suspect who police said had entered his home.

Just this week, that 65-year-old homeowner, who is a licensed gun owner, was cleared of any criminal wrong-doing in the shooting.

@Jamaicamecrazy: "West Bay houses all the drug dealers, gang members unemployed addicts of Cayman,"...And if you don't smoke drugs in WB you won't smoke them at all? And I guess it's safe to assume that everyone in the drug court and summary court list for drugs violations are all from WB.

Has the thought ever crossed anyone's mind that while the incident happened in WB it might not have been a WBer who committed it?

The lovely little sleepy island that we began to visit some 15+ years ago is beginning to sound more, and more like 'Downtown LA'; not an appealing image.
Urgent action is required to clean the place up.

A view from the outside......I have been keeping an eye on the news in Cayman as I am - or is that was? - looking forward to an extended trip to Cayman in the new year. I hope to visit for several weeks following the sale of my business. I've not been to the Caribbean before and this was to be a BIG treat following years of hard work. Cayman was always talked about as a safe place to visit. If you review the news for the past few months it's not sounding so appealing. So many murders, so much gun crime, fatal traffic accidents & DUIs. And that doesn't seem to be confined to gangs but impacting on locals and visitors now. Of course there are 'no-go areas' in many cities or countries - places best avoided by tourists and visitors - but on a small Island like Grand Cayman it seems that this might spill over so easily and impact on those outside of the gang-culture. My Cayman dream isn't looking so rosie now. I wish the good people of Cayman the best in sorting out these problems.

West Bay houses all the drug dealers, gang members unemployed addicts of Cayman, along with many good law abiding people, I think all of Cayman knows this except the police...seeing how it has a population of a couple thousand and one way in and out it is frightening that these astute officers cant conjure up a plan to rid this ongoing problem.....maybe the police are scared of west bay just like everyone else?

I don't worry about these young men anymore. I'm not say I'm not sorry for the family's lost. But if you sleep with dogs you get flea's. These young men all over cayman take their lives for granted and do dumb things. If all these young men get a job and focus on staying out of trouble this island would go back to the way it was.

Wonderful! six months without an unlawful killing. What is it about West Bay? And they all have votes and three seats in our Assembly. When will the Premier do something about his District?
