Flooding possible from tonight
13 September 2010

Heavy rains associated with a tropical low-pressure weather system could bring flooding to low-lying areas of Grand Cayman between Monday and Tuesday evenings.

The weather system, which was dubbed Invest 92L last week because it had the potential to develop into a tropical cyclone, is expected to pass to the south of Grand Cayman early Tuesday.  It will bring an estimated two inches of rain to the Cayman Islands, along with windy conditions and moderate seas of 3 to 5 feet.  Higher gusts and rough seas are expected in an around the heavier showers associated with the weather system.

Hazard Management Cayman Islands issued a press release Monday morning warning of flooding in low-lying areas as a result of the heavy rains.

“Roads, homes, businesses and parking lots may be affected,” Hazard Management stated. “Residents in low-lying areas need to take precautionary measures if they live in areas with a history of flooding.”

The press release advised residents to avoid driving on flooded roads.

“If you have to drive through flood water, drive very slowly,” it stated.

Hazard Management said there were no plans to open storm shelters, but it advised residents to monitor the media for further announcements.
