Diver death investigated
03 February, 2012
A 47-year-old American tourist died Friday morning while diving off North West Point, Royal Cayman Islands Police reported.

At about 9.30am the woman was diving at the Little Tunnel Dive site off the coast of West Bay. As she ascended she appeared to get into difficulty and, on surfacing, lost consciousness, police said.

Staff from Red Sail Sports administered CPR as they brought the woman to shore to meet with the emergency services.

The woman was conveyed to the Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town, where she was found to be dead on arrival.

My thoughts and prayers go out to her family. I also suffered a similar loss in 1978 while my husband was diving behind the Sea View. I was alone on those rocks with my 9 year old son when it became apparent that something was wrong. Alone in a foreign country not knowing what to do. As soon as I asked for help the wonderful people of Cayman surrounded my son and I in a protective embrace and the local authorities and dive shop operators did everything in their power to find my husband. I was overwhelmed by the concern and compassion my Cayman Family showed. Out of that tragedy a strong bond of friendship was forged which has continued to this day. I am so grateful for that friendship for it has enriched my life in so many ways. Every time I visit I know that my loved one is swimming free in those beautiful waters for it is where he felt the most close to God. I am comforted by that.

Our family lost a precious and wonderful member Friday morning. Her companion has been treated with the utmost respect and graciousness that any of us could imagine by the staff of the hotel and Red Sail Sports. For that we thank you. Keep her in your prayers as we wait to bring them both home.
