White collar will be off the hook

The white collar boxing show at Treasure Island was so successful that plans are well under way for the next one in the summer.

Put together by promoters Lachie Hewitt and Chris Dinan, over 600 packed into the resort popular with locals and tourists alike for competitive boxing bouts, a kick boxing match and a Muay Thai demonstration.

Enthused by the response and calls for a repeat show, the next one promises to be even better.

From his Rogue Gym on West Bay Road beside Treasure Island, Hewitt is honing the next group of potential weekend warriors, assisted by the personal trainer Andrew Ford. Both have been sparring with the wannabe Rocky Balboas - mainly office workers - who nevertheless all have the same commitment as aspiring champs.

“Preparations are going really well,” said Hewitt. “I’ve got a good group of guys starting up. We start the camps mid-February and we’ve got club bouts at the end of February which will showcase a couple of guys who will be fighting in the mid-year event. We’ve got a couple of rematches and hope to showcase Muay Thai and kick boxing.

“We’ll probably have six to eight fights. The fight night again will be at Treasure Island which we hope to extend so that there’s more seating and maybe a grandstand.

“We’re still getting feedback from the last show in November. A couple of people requested rematches, including Omar Dixon and Bruce Coulson, only this time just boxing, not kick boxing. (Dixon won the kick boxing fight easily). We’ve also got a local fighter, Flloyd Moxam, who might take on Omar as well. We like people to match up really well which is why we’re trying to arrange them early.”
