A frustrated frog trying to catch digital insects on a smart phone has notched up more that 2.5 million hits on YouTube.

The African bullgrog is the second member of the animal kingdom, after a bearded dragon, to be filmed playing the Ant Smasher game.

The frog's aim is well on target, and on numerous occasions he actually manages to crush the virtual insects, reports Metro.

But it becomes increasingly frustrated as it realises that the ants it has 'caught' are still on the screen and not in his belly.

As the game winds down the man goes to touch the screen but, in a surprise twist, the frog launches an attack on his owner's thumb, causing him to yell out in shock.
