Police have released closed circuit TV footage of an armed robbery at the Esso Four Winds petrol station in West Bay that occurred earlier this month.

DC Nathan Turner, the officer in charge of the enquiry, said: “The footage and stills clearly show the suspect walk across the forecourt and enter the gas station to commit the robbery. He cannot see anyone within the premises, so he goes outside and forces the pump attendant back into the store at gunpoint.

“He then threatens the attendant and a female worker within the gas station before making off with a sum of cash.”

No shots were fired and no-one was injured in the robbery, which happened around 9pm, Thursday, 7 October.

DC Turner said he hoped the release of the CCTV footage would jog people’s memories. “Did you see this man approach the gas station or make off from the scene? Do you recognise any of the clothing he’s wearing?”

He also appealed for the occupants of a dark coloured vehicle which was in the forecourt of the gas station to come forward.

“There was a man and a woman in the car and I would ask them to call me at West Bay police station – they may have information which would be vital to the enquiry,” DC Turner said.

The suspect is described as being medium to dark skinned, slim build, approximately 5’10” in height; his head was either shaved or bald at the back. He was wearing light blue calf length jeans, white trainers, a grey sweatshirt and a black ‘NY’ baseball cap. His lower face was covered with a dark blue bandana.

Anyone with information should contact West Bay CID on 949-3999, or Crime Stoppers 800-8477 (TIPS).

The whole idea about the CCTV camera's are a great idea!

But....and there is always a but.

The cctv camera's help you catch the perpetrators. One of two things are going to happen. They are going to diguise themselves better, or the crime will stop.

Now we all know, crime can never be stopped. Or we would not need police.

So in the end, the camera's cost millions, and the end result is no better than without them. Becuase if the criminals disquise themselves better. It still comes back on the police to go around the neighbourhoods and ask 'who dun it'.

So in other words, CCTV isn't going to solve the problem anymore, than having a majority of your police officers, unarmed.

Not to belabour the point but do the 'powers that be' in the Cayman Islands really believe that this problem will go away by itself if they continue to do absolutely nothing ?

Do they believe these guys are using 'toy' guns or that the guns aren't loaded or that innocent people won't be shot 'just for the fun of it' if nothing concrete is done to confront these bandits ?

The Cayman Islands already has enough fire-arms trained police officers to form a special 'anti-robbery response unit' specifically tasked to patrol the streets and businesses of Cayman to confront, apprehend or shoot these criminals.

Anyone barefaced enough to be waving a gun in innocent people's faces, as this fool is doing in this video, deserves to be shot out of hand.

If all the RCIPS can do is put out a video and beg for witnesses, then the Cayman Islands is being badly shortchanged.

Either give the citizens of the Cayman Islands a proper police unit to stop this or give them the right to arm themselves, with the proper training and certification, for the protection of their lives and businesses.

This stupidness has gone far enough !
