Back to Main Story:
The Perfect Solution

Make drinking your eight-a-day a delight by infusing your water with slices of fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs.

Nutritionists agree that combining fruits and vegetables can enhance the flavour and nutritional value of your water.

Citrus fruits, berries and local fruits like mangoes can add a splash of colour and taste to filtered water.

“I’d say go for citrus,” nutritionist Andrea Hill says.

“Orange, lime, lemon, [and] grapefruit wedges are wonderful and very refreshing in water.”

Nutritionist Helki Weber also recommends the health benefits of citrus.

“Lemons and limes are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which may help aid in digestion, respiration and the prevention of cancer,” she says.

Adding sliced fruit to warm instead of cold water enhances these benefits even more.  If you don’t have time to slice up fresh fruit, Andrea recommends using juice as a substitute.

“Pure fruit juices like acai or pure, unsweetened cranberry juice diluted in water can provide an antioxidant-boost with great flavour,” she says.

Try these recipes below, or combine your own favourite fruits, vegetables and herbs, for water that gives you a burst of flavour with every sip.

Orange Mint Water

  • 3 oranges, sliced
  • 10 mint leaves
  • ½ gallon filtered water

Cucumber Melon Water

  • 1 cucumber, sliced
  • ¼ honeydew melon, cubed
  • ¼ cantaloupe, cubed
  • ½ gallon filtered water
