Creepy musical comes to Cayman
TOPIC: Arts & Culture
November 3, 2010

It has been an active year for the Cayman Drama Society, which this month is presenting Little Shop of Horrors, running from 18 November to 12 December at the Prospect Playhouse.

This is the fourth production of the season for the Society at the cozy, intimate location of the Prospect Playhouse and Director Sheree Ebanks is excited to be rising to the challenge.

She gives some background to the story: “Little Shop of Horrors started out as a Roger Corman, 1960s B-movie. It was a campy black and white horror film, with a cameo by a very young Jack Nicholson. In the 1980s the screenplay by Charles Griffith was adapted into a stage musical with book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken (the composers of later Disney hits such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid.)”

Sheree says the musical was so popular that in 1986 it was made into a second movie, this time a musical starring big name stars like Steve Martin, Bill Murray, and Rick Moranis.

The fun, yet creepy musical tells the story of Seymour Krelborn, a timid loser who finds a mysterious plant that he names Audrey II after a co-worker that he loves. As Seymour’s life improves and his dreams start to come true, it becomes clear that the plant is a bloodthirsty, man-eating alien that threatens to destroy the world.

“Enjoy the fun as Seymour makes his choices – and reaps the consequences,” Sheree says. “The show is great fun for all ages, it has great Sixties-style rock music, romance, murder and who doesn’t enjoy a funny monster show once in a while?”

Sheree says that the logistics in obtaining and bringing down the plant, Audrey II were quite a challenge. She located a company in Massachusetts which was not only willing to ship the plants, but also come to Cayman to work with technical directors, Neil Rooney and Tracy Moore to bring the plants to life. JaDuke Scene shop personnel arrived in Cayman in early August and within one week had the plants in tip top shape, ready for rehearsals.

Rory Mann, will star as Seymour and Kristina Horaceck will play his love interest, Audrey. Mr Mushnick, Seymour’s adopted dad is played by Peter Kosa. The girl group singing narrators will be played by Isabella Rooney (Chiffon), Melanie Ebanks (Crystal) and Teri Quappe (Ronnette). The sadistic dentist, Orin, is played by Dominic Wheaton. Neil Rooney is the voice of Audrey II, partnering with Cody Moore who will be undertaking the plant puppeteering.

Other cast members include Martin Tedd, Valerie Tzuker and Tamara Bryan. Glen Inanga is the musical director and Kelly Rooney is the stage manager. Chuck and Barrie Quappe, otherwise known as Sea ‘N B will be leading the band through each performance.
