October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month worldwide and is being marked in Cayman with a number of events to raise money for local breast cancer charities and to raise awareness of the disease.

Nearly one in four of all cancer patients seen within the public health system in Cayman over the past year had breast cancer, according to Health Services Authority statistics.

Of the 365 Health Services Authority cancer patients who visited the Cayman Islands Hospital, an HSA clinic or pharmacy, or who were processed through the system in any way between September 2010 and August 2011, 93 had breast cancer, making that form of the disease the most prevalent in Cayman.

Each year, the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens runs a breast cancer awareness campaign. This year, events lined up for the campaign include awareness meetings at district clinics (Bodden Town, 12 October; West Bay, 17 October; East End, 20 October; and in George Town on 24 October).

An opening ceremony was held at Camana Bay on Monday, 3 October.

The club is also organising this year’s annual Brenda Tibbetts Lund 5k Memorial Run/Walk on 8 October.
