December 1, 2010 Tortuga Rum’s inaugural ‘Art of the Barrel’ series saw twelve entrants
using an authentic Tortuga Rum Barrel as a canvas to produce art. The
barrel art could be, but was not limited to, paintings in various
mediums, carving, deconstruction and/or sculpture.
The cottage on the corner of South Church Street and Denham-Thompson Way
was moved to its current location over forty years ago by Wesley and
Erma Eldemire, van der Bol’s son’s great grandparents.

Although by day Karie Bergstrom is busy as the director
of Consulting and Human Resources at Deloitte, just recently her spare time has
been devoted to a passion that she has held since school days – the
theatre.
The nominations are now in and the stage is now set for
the 17th Annual National Arts and Culture Awards, to be held on Friday 22 October at the Harquail
Theatre.
In these days of economic constraints it takes some serious
out-of-the-box thinking to generate income, especially if you are
self-employed. Nickola McCoy-Snell, owner of fine art gallery
Arteccentrix has employed some creative thinking when it comes to
marketing her gallery and the myriad of artists who she represents.
The National Gallery, in partnership with Caledonian, is currently
featuring a retrospective of work by renowned local artist Janet Walker.
Comprising a collection 35 watercolours, the exhibition spans several
decades and explores the many changes that have occurred within our

The state of retail
Septemeber 1, 2010 One of the many curiosities of the current downturn is the state of
retail. On the one hand, we are told that consumers are short of cash
and likely to become more so as tax increases and cutbacks in public
spending begin to bit.
The National Gallery continues its bi-monthly discussion with local artists on topics relevant to the art scene in Cayman today. This month the discussion falls with artists Gordon Solomon, Avril Ward and Renate Seffer, the three artists in residence at the National Gallery’s A Day in the Life III annual programme.
The clean white walls of Arteccentrix Fine Art Gallery have recently
been transformed into a portrait gallery of some well known and some
not-so-well known faces, but all equally depicted with passion and care
by artist Greg Lipton.
The show was titled: “10”: Love, Hope and the Pursuit of Happiness.
“10” represents the year 2010 and the size of the 10’x10’ canvases that
the majority of the artists worked on, whether it was fine art
photography or paintings.

and in particular the British press are brilliant and satirising their
politicians. Verging on the rude most of the time British humour can
leave visitors cringing, in shock but always laughing, so the Tate

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has said it
disapproves of Germany’s new departure tax, as recently announced by the
country’s government, which the government introduced because of
environmental concerns.
The plan is backed by the Barbados Minister of Tourism, Richard Sealy,
who has said that health and wellness tourism is growing faster than the
overall travel and tourism industry, and thus Barbados plans to develop
its health and wellness market.
In June the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands became a huge
blank canvas for three artists, each well known for their own inimitable
artistic style, during an artist residency programme that is now in its
third year at the Gallery.
Via his incredibly beautiful sculpting, Horacio Esteban breathes life
and vigour into seemingly dead and buried rock, a rare talent that was
recently showcased at an exhibition of his works held at Arteccentrix
Fine Art Gallery located in Governor’s Square.
About three years ago Ogier decided to reinvigorate its community programme by polling its staff to find out where they felt there was a real need for aid and assistance, to help the firm formulate a plan that would give back to the community in a manner that reflected staff interests and concerns.
Grand Cayman is blessed with a handful of professional art galleries.But one of the oldest and best known sits unassumingly at the corner of Denham Thompson Road and South Church Street in an historic waddle and daub Caymanian house.

Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of a down-and-out skid row floral assistant who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious appetite for fresh blood. Soon “Audrey II” becomes an ill-tempered, singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite. Finally it reveals itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination.

From 31 May until 10 June artists Gordon Solomon, Avril Ward and Renate Seffer will be in residence at the National Gallery, creating unique pieces of art right in front of visitors to the Gallery. And from the members preview on the 10 June all the way until 25 August visitors to the Gallery will be able to enjoy the three solo exhibitions by the artists.
Having really upped the ante in recent months to promote local artists
and their work, the Visual Arts Society has again created a marvelous
opportunity for locals to showcase their talents via their Artist of the
Season series. Recently it was the turn of Maureen Lazarus, a lady
whose work is much-loved in Cayman for its vivid and accurate depiction
of traditional iconic Cayman flora, such as sea grapes and coconuts.
Even though Renate Seffer’s work may have looked fairly light-hearted on the surface, there have always been undercurrents of social comment running through her work, as she furthers: “I love to create artwork that sparks conversation. It’s interesting for me to take the viewer to another level.”

February 3, 2010 For the new year, the National Gallery is reopening its workshop just
behind Miss Lassie’s house, so I am really looking forward to
restarting the Still Life Studio after a whole year of baking and eating
fruits instead of painting them. Nickola McCoy is also opening a new
gallery called Arteccentrix in Governors Square, so look out for the
grand opening if it hasn’t happened before this goes to print.
Cayman Arts Festival takes place from 5 to 11 February and this year
again promises to be another musical extravaganza. The Journal has a
preview of the extra-special entertainment planned.
Auditions took place at the beginning of December for Cayman Drama’s
Society’s newest production: Wit, a play that won a Pulitzer Prize for
drama in 1999.
On 30 January over 100 artists, crafts people and designers will be
