’s amazing how much cinematic goodness you can get from a high-definition TV these days. Together with the latest Blu-ray DVD player in the market, what you get at home may rival that of a cinema experience, and more.
Of course, you need the latest state-of-the-art TV capable of such images to begin with.
LG Electronics (M) Sdn Bhd recently unveiled its new range of Cinema 3D TVs to meet the growing demands of the discerning audio-videophile. There are three models in the range (the LW6500, LW5700 and LW4500) and for this article, we paired the LW5700 (42-inch, RM3,599) with the LG 3D Blu-ray player BD660 (RM899).
Now, the movies. To stretch the unit’s potential, we decided to go with Green Lantern 3D (Blu-ray DVD) and Gulliver’s Travels 3D (Blu-ray DVD), courtesy of Speedy Video Distributors.
When Green Lantern starts to play, one thing you immediately notice is the picture quality. Pardon the jargons, but with “flicker-free” feature (the first in the market) and the capability to eliminate “crosstalk”, it clearly triumphs over other TV brands.
In simple English, flicker-free refers to smooth and more fluid motion, as compared to the “jerky” shots that you normally get when there’s camera movement in a particular scene. As for crosstalk, let’s just say that without it, you get solid and vivid 3D images and none of that shadowy effect.
Green Lantern, as we all know, features many action scenes in the air, across the sky and into the far reaches of the galaxy. Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds) is a test pilot turned defender of the universe who displays much of his heroic acts in swift, bullet-speed, stylish moves. These, with the LG Cinema 3D TV, quite simply translate into “wow” effects. It’s like watching the movie for the first time with such superb HD clarity. Even close-up shots come so much alive in 3D that you see the depth and dimension of noses and cheekbones.
For these advancements in technology, two certificate agencies based in Europe, Intertek and TUV, have stamped their mark of approval. This is the first time that flicker-free is endorsed for TVs in the industry.
With the smooth picture, say goodbye to eye fatigue and feelings of dizziness, two of the most common complaints from viewers of 3D TV. Who knew a crappy movie like Gulliver’s Travels could be so enjoyable with 3D Lilliputians?
Helping to create a more comfortable viewing experience is the Cinema 3D glasses. At only 16g and with no electrical parts, they are free of electromagnetic waves. So, unlike other leading 3D TV brands, charging is not required.
The LG Cinema 3D range also boasts a cool feature that allows you to watch 2D films in 3D format. The conversion function works for Blu-ray and DVD video formats, which simply means great news for those with a huge catalogue of DVDs at home.
For this test, we selected Disney’s Tron sequel of Tron Legacy (Blu-ray DVD), the local fantasy musical Magika (DVD), the animated flick The Incredibles (DVD) and Mariah Carey’s live concert, The Adventures Of Mimi (DVD).
Tron and The Incredibles turn into eye-popping 3D movies as expected (though the quality is not on par with Green Lantern), but the same can’t be said of Mimi’s concert and Magika, which only shine in a few scenes where depth and dimension come into play.
Mimi’s audience appears in 3D every now and then during the show, yet you’ll be delighted to see little details which suddenly become so vivid with the TV.
These include the sparkling gold dust on Mimi’s abs and the precious stones on her diamond-encrusted black bra top that she wore during the show’s opening number, It’s Like That. You can even count the golden sequins on her yellow dress while she’s performing Vision of Love!
Further boosting the picture quality is LG’s 3D Light Boost, a thin film covering the Cinema 3D panel that ensures 3D images are shown at full brightness. It counteracts any dimness that can sometimes occur with 3D content to create brighter, clearer images for a superb 3D viewing experience.
The unit’s Flexible Viewing Positions and Wide Viewing Angle also mean that you and your family can enjoy Mimi’s adventures and more from any part of your living room, without having the quality compromised. Now that’s real home entertainment!
LG’s Cinema 3D TV is ranked No. 1 among the Five Best TVs for 2011 by PC World Magazine for excellent 3D depth and crisp picture quality.
It received a Gold Award with a review score of 9 out of 10 by Hardware Mag in Malaysia
