In his 10-year career, Oston Matthews has worked at a number of different resorts, including an exclusive property on the world-famous island of Mustique where rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous was almost a daily occurrence – proof positive that being a bartender can have fascinating perks.

Born in St. Vincent, Oston always had travel on his mind, particularly when he became part of the band King’s Dread where he played keyboards and drums, although not at the same time of course.

However, his mother was not so keen on her son becoming a penniless musician, and so once he left school she insisted on getting him a job at Palm Island Resort where she was working at the time. His first position was in the kitchen as a breakfast chef. He really liked cooking, but the 5am starts were another story. Used to the night hours of an entertainer, he found the alarm a brutal annoyance and after six months he decided that he would like to try something different with more reasonable shifts. He became a server, which led to bartending a few years later.

When an opportunity to work on a cruise ship came his way it seemed like a dream come true – he could earn money and travel the world as he had always dreamed. However, Oston found there was a big difference between working on a ship and vacationing on one. He barely got a chance to explore their various ports of call, and so at the end of his six-month contract he moved back to terra firma.

He began working at the five-Star Cotton House Resort on Mustique. The likes of Mick Jagger and Beyoncé would saunter up to the bar to sample his concoctions. He served some of the fussiest customers one could possibly encounter and he came out shining.

I guess, even spending time with entertainment royalty can get old after a while, and so a couple of years later he went on to Raffles Resort on Canouan Island. This Singapore chain, famous for its signature Singapore sling drink, was yet another high-end string to Oston’s bow.

He spent one-and-a-half years at Raffles before searching a website focused on hotel careers across the globe. He applied for a job at the Marriott’s Resort in Grand Cayman, moving to the island in 2005. In 2006 he was recommended by a previous manager for a bartending position at Morritt’s Tortuga Club in East End.

The laid back atmosphere of the resort and its surrounding district appealed to Oston, and so he accepted. You can now find him on most evenings at Windows Bar or out on the water at Mimi’s Tiki Bar serving customers who seek him out for his excellent skills and bright, welcoming smile.

Oston is really enjoying his time out in East End where erryting is irie…mon. Stop by and visit the man who has experience serving the Who’s Who of stage and screen. He’ll make you feel like a star!   WH
