Grand Cayman’s latest restaurant, Home, is looking to create a buzz with tapas-style food at recession-busting prices.
Located in Treasure Island Resort on West Bay Road, the newest culinary hotspot is the brainchild of several local investors. According to Des Byrne, Home is offering something a little out of the ordinary.
“We are adopting a fresh slant by providing great, reasonably priced food in a relaxed and welcoming space,” he says.
“We plan to introduce live music on Wednesdays and at weekends. Home is, essentially, the kind of place where you are guaranteed a safe and inviting environment.”
Decor
The restaurant has an open plan space and a laidback bohemian ambience. With a bar, a cosy lounge, stage and a split level eating area, Home invites patrons to linger.
“We envisage attracting those wanting to mull over the paper at the bar with a glass of wine and some tapas to patrons meeting up for a long and leisurely catch-up session over a nice red and several plates of good food,” Des says.
Home has around 80 covers yet manages to retain its cosy, lived-in feel due to its rustic family-style wooden tables, which comfortably seat eight.
Chandeliers and other touches add to the homely environment.
Those wanting to enjoy their meal in an al fresco setting can ask for patio seating.
Menu options
The global tapas menu is well-balanced and has plenty to offer the adventurous foodie.
We chose three tapas dishes: the phyllo (fresh spinach, onions and brie wrapped in light pastry), lambi (herb encrusted lamb cutlets in a mint salsa) and the chicken liver pate served with toast and cranberry relish.
For main, I had the shrimp Chileaneo. It was beautifully presented and tasted every bit as good as it looked. A generous helping of shrimps sautéed in garlic, ginger, scallion and parsley, shallots, sherry and a hint of cream was served with vegetable risotto. My guest enjoyed the striploin churasco, which was marinated in a mix of fresh herbs and spices with grilled vegetables.
For dessert, we shared a delicious pear, cherry and almond crumble, which had just enough tartness to justify the buttery crumble topping.
With three chefs, the culinary offerings reflect a range of exciting influences and talents and with all meals, pastries and breads made on-site daily, clients are assured of only the freshest of fare. The restaurant also does room delivery to Treasure Island guests.
In time the restaurant could become for many a home away from home. WH
