The Lobster Pot Restaurant is an institution in Cayman, serving the community for more than 40 years. This makes it the longest-established steak and seafood restaurant in Cayman.

It all about the view

Located on North Church Street overlooking the ocean, it is no surprise to find that seafood occupies pride of place on the Lobster Pot menu, although there are plenty of other options as well.

Any given lunch is likely to boast a mix of locals, corporate types and visitors to the Island. Some are drawn purely by the view over the ocean and the boats and cruise ships anchored off shore. Fortunately Lobster Pot does not rely solely on its view to draw customers, although it probably could.

Sampling the seafood
I had the conch chowder as a starter and it was very flavourful, with pieces of conch and chunks of vegetables making for a hearty dish. It had just the right amount of spice to give it a slight bite, enough to make it linger a bit after the last spoonful, which came all too quickly.

For an entree I had the garlic shrimp, which is served with fresh vegetables and white rice. The tiger shrimp is sautéed in garlic butter and was beautifully prepared and lightly flavoured. As someone who isn’t always the world’s greatest seafood fan, this dish certainly won me over.

Other options
Of course, there are those who, even in such a perfect setting, would prefer something other than seafood. The restaurant caters amply for those folk as well, with steak, pasta, salads and sandwiches.

Extensive wine list
Restaurant manager Gunter Gosch takes great pride not only in the food the restaurant serves, but also in the extensive and well balanced wine list, which includes a wide selection of Austrian wines you are unlikely to find elsewhere on Island.

Of course, for those who have to head back to the office after lunch and actually be productive, an impromptu tour through Austria courtesy of the wine list might be something better left for dinner time. WH

Lunch is served from 11.30am to 2.30pm, Monday to Friday. For more information or reservations, call 949-2736 or visit lobsterpot.ky.
