The Cayman Islands Agricultural Show is one of the biggest community events around, drawing thousands of visitors. Granted, a first prize cow might not stir everyone’s passion, but this annual event has much more to offer.

Save the date
The 43rd edition of the show is set to take place on Ash Wednesday, 17 February, at the Stacey Watler Agricultural Pavilion. The show is not only about agriculture, but represents all things Caymanian, with a strong focus on the cultural aspect of Cayman as well.

It is a fun day out, whether or not you have any interest in agriculture. With food stalls aplenty and activities for kids, there is more than enough to keep everyone entertained.

New additions
This year the event will feature a couple of new additions, including a tent honouring the role Caymanian women played in agriculture while the men were away at sea.

Another traditional activity that will take centre stage will be dominoes, with the event playing host to a tournament.

There will also be an expanded use of the arena by the equestrian association and the wranglers, with a mini rodeo being put on.

Get there early
The show kicks off early, with the gates opening at 8am. With some 10,000 people expected to visit the show, there is bound to be a great vibe.

Tickets to the event will be $10 for adults, $5 for children from two to 12 years old and free for children younger than two.

There will also be special gate prizes, with the first prize being a weekend getaway for two donated by the Alexander Hotel in Cayman Brac.

There will also be raffle tickets available for $25, with a $20,000 first prize. The second prize is a garden package donated by A.L. Thompson and the third prize is a barbecue grill, also donated by A.L. Thompson.

A special children’s play area is also planned, which will include a petting zoo, pony rides, a maze, games, story-telling, arts and crafts and even a bouncing castle – more than enough to keep the younger set entertained all day.   WH
