Finding something new to do on an evening out in Cayman can be a challenge. Fortunately Kings Sports Centre recently opened its four-lane bowling alley to the public.
For an evening out with friends, it is the ideal activity. Kingpin bowling alley includes a private lounge where people can hang out from around 15 minutes prior to their game, with snacks and drinks available.
Something new
Even for the inexperienced player, an evening of tenpin bowling can be lot of fun, as I experienced recently. Our group consisted primarily of inexperienced players, with a number of absolute beginners.
About those shoes
Of course, the first thing most people remark on when it comes to tenpin bowling is the shoes. With my size 12 feet in a pair of bowling shoes, the resemblance to a clown was just a bit too close for comfort. Fortunately no-one remarked on it, even though I could see they were thinking it! So best accept the look might not be quite you and get on with the game. Just remember to wear socks to your game.
Not quite Wii
For those used to Wii bowling, this is somewhat different. For one thing, the ball is a lot heavier than the little Wii controller. I used a 14 pound ball, which brings me to my next point – although tenpin bowling might not look like exercise, you do tend to feel it the next morning.
As the night goes on
By the end of our second game, some people had improved dramatically, while it seemed others must have run out of beginner’s luck as they got progressively worse. In spite of some terrible bowling with gutters aplenty, everyone had a great time. Of course, the occasional lucky strike helped lift the spirits.
Since you have completed your game, the proximity to Grand Harbour means you can continue your evening at the Brick House or Dog House to wind down after the game and pretend that luck had nothing to do with it.
The cost of a game is $13.50 per person including shoes. A lane can be reserved for an hour for $75, for up to five people, including shoes.
Kingpin is also planning to host special events, from glow bowl to 80s night parties. The alley can also be booked for corporate events or children’s parties. WH
