When it comes to being a DJ, few display the same unbridled passion and keen interest to excel as Odalis Rojas Garcia.

The Dominican Republic native, who describes his style as a combination of tribal, electro, minimal and house music, moved to the Cayman Islands three-and-a-half years ago and has managed to make quite a dent in the dance scene.

Odalis describes the music he plays as, “A celebratory messages about dancing, love and sexuality, all underpinned with repetitive arrangements and a steady bass drum beat.”

At the age of 19, during an impressionable time in his growth as a person and a DJ, Odalis was drawn to house music after listening to a DJ at a rave in the Dominican Republic.

It was during such encounters that the decision was made to take the art form more seriously.

“The feeling it evoked in me watching the energy of the crowd let me know this would be my passion and that just always grew.”

Within six months of realising his calling was to be a DJ, he had managed to become the resident DJ at Onno’s Bar in the Dominican Republic.

He held the post for 11 years, playing six nights a week and teaching new DJs the tricks of the trade.

Now part of the One World DJ Group in the Cayman Islands, you can catch DJ Odalis at the Bamboo on Friday and Saturday nights and starting this month at It’s Fresh at Billy Bones on Saturday afternoons from 2pm to 7pm, where he plays “daytime mash up tunes” as he calls it.

Regarding his experience in the Cayman Islands thus far, Odalis has only positive things to say.

“It is a privilege to offer something as unique but familiar as rhythm, sound and dance to everyone in Grand Cayman and even the Sister Islands when those opportunities come calling.”

He added that he was flattered by the acceptance and encouragement he has received from everyone he has come into contact with since moving to the Island.

“This is a special place and the people make it that way. There is such a mix and wide range of nationalities in Cayman, which makes it an extra interesting place to live and DJ of course,” he says.

Odalis is also available for weddings and private functions through One World DJs.  WH
