Around the globe, Earth Day is celebrated on 22 April in an attempt to focus more attention on environmental issues.

This year, the theme is ‘Green Generation’ with a focus on promoting environmental awareness in schools.

However, there are many events for anyone with a bit of a green streak to them.

It is also a good time to evaluate our everyday lives and see how we can lessen our impact on the environment, as small changes can make a big difference.

One of the biggest Earth Day events, the annual Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce Roadside Cleanup will take place on Saturday, 17 April from 7am to 11am.

With cleanup teams working all over the Islands from West Bay to East End, the event has a big following among companies in Cayman. After the event, participants can join the Chamber of Commerce for a free brunch at Public Beach on West Bay Road.

The National Trust for the Cayman Islands is also planning a full calendar of events for April.

The Trust will host an environmental story telling week at the Mission House from 19 to 25 April, aimed at primary school aged children. They will have the opportunity to visit the Mission House and listen to and participate in interactive read-alouds as skilled storytellers, in costume, bring the print to life

The Trust also organises a 5km fun run, which will take place on 25 April to celebrate Earth Day. The run is sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers and provides runners and walkers to be active and enjoy the environment Earth Day aims to protect.
