Cayman’s newest bar is named after Cayman’s national bird the Green Parrot, and like its feathered namesake it has a personality all of its own.
 
Perched near the waterfront at Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, the bar is comprised of a central, authentic East End Silver Thatch roofed island bar surrounded by stools and a seating area, with further alfresco picnic tables.
 
Happy hour here is a chilled experience; once the cruise tourists have sailed off into the sunset it’s possible to pull up a pew and enjoy what’s on offer.
 
You can always pick up a Caybrew, or plough through a selection of cocktails prepared by the skilled staff.
 
Best of all, there’s a good selection of eats prepared on the grill. Be it a Barkers hot dog, Grand Caymanian burger or the worryingly-titled Hell-fired Jerk Chicken Burger there’s no chance you won’t be getting stuck in.
 
In the name of research I dragged myself down to check out the fare.

Large drumstick
No sooner do I sit down than I get a worryingly-large drumstick waved in my mush.
 
Now, I think, either Big Bird from Sesame Street is hopping around on one leg or this is some kind of Chernobyl import. (Actually it’s a giant turkey drummer weighing in the region of 1.5 pounds – the week’s happy hour theme.) Previously the bar has given out ‘theme park-sized’ pretzels and corn dogs – it changes weekly.
 
“Our Margaritas are the some of the best on the island. We have one of the closest bars to the water in George Town and they just taste that much better when the breeze hits you down there,” says Colin Doyle of Green Parrot. No argument here.
 
Offers come thick and fast and the $3 beers and $4 cocktails make it, according to Colin, the cheapest bar in George Town. Given that I’ve managed to parley a lift home, it seems rude to refuse such largesse.
 
I’m not alone – as the offices empty, so does the Parrot fill up - particularly on a Friday. Soon all around is the lively squawk of those let out of their cage for the evening. Those with blackberries, inevitably, are tweeting their mates to come down and join in the fun.   WH
