The Foster’s Food Fair Sea Swim is one of the biggest open water swims in Cayman, with the 800 metre distance making it very achievable for all fitness levels. The event is set to take place on 11 September and with just short of 200 participants last year, the organisers are hoping to break the 200 barrier with the 2010 edition of the event.
The swim will take place in the tranquil waters off Seven Mile Beach, which is the perfect venue for beginners, with the abundance of marine life serving as a pleasant distraction for those who would prefer to take their time finishing the event rather than racing for first place. The distance of the swim is ideal preparation for those looking to test their form early on for the Cayman Islands triathlon.
One of the biggest advantages of open water swimming is that it requires very little in the way of equipment. If you have a swimsuit and a pair of goggles, you are good to go. The lack of waves along Seven Mile Beach as well as a mostly sandy bottom makes the sport very accessible, especially for those who need to make a quick rest stop around the halfway point.
The sport itself is excellent for building fitness without the impact associated with running, making it a very good option for anyone with knee injuries pickup up participating in another sport. WH
