Fill your tank for travel

Let’s face it – travel isn’t what it used to be. In years gone by, there was a certain romance, a certain mystique, to international travel. You felt like a member of an elite club when you stepped into the airport building – you knew good things were about to happen.

These days, you are still treated like someone special (a potential terrorist) and things still happen to you (but not the good things you were looking forward to, unless you are a great fan of pat-downs).
At least you can start your journey right by sitting down for a meal at the Hungry Horse Restaurant and Bar at Owen Roberts International airport.

Even though many flights taking off from Cayman are only in the air for little more than an hour, all the waiting for security and immigration at departure and arrival means hours without good food. And airline food, well, it hasn’t been the butt of many jokes over the years without good reason, so it is a great idea to get a last taste of Cayman before you add to the air miles.

Located above the terminal building at Owen Roberts, Hungry Horse is the perfect spot to see off family or friends heading overseas or to wait for a flight to arrive. No need to wait for an announcement on whether a flight has arrived, just look at the colour scheme on the airplane. This also makes it a great spot for kids or anyone else who cannot get enough of seeing the wonder of modern technology in action. Of course, this is more the case for those deciding to sit outside and enjoy the wonderful Cayman weather. The eatery also has the option of indoor seating in air conditioned comfort for those who would rather not be reminded of the travel ahead of them.

The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch, with a wide selection of dishes ranging from quick Cayman classics like patties to more substantial food, including Cayman-style fish, jerk chicken and homemade chilli. For those looking for something lighter, there is a selection of salads, as well as sandwiches, wraps and paninis. Of course, the restaurant also has freshly prepared hamburgers available for all those fussy young diners who cannot be convinced to try something new.

When it comes to beverages, the Hungry Horse has a selection of fruit juice for those who want a healthy option, or tea and coffee, perfect to keep you from falling asleep in the departure lounge and missing your flight. The bar is also the perfect place for a last farewell drink with friends, and serves a full complement of beers, wines and cocktails.

The restaurant also has a great selection of items available for breakfast, perfect for those early birds who follow the ‘hurry up and wait’ method when it comes to travelling – rush out of the house without having had breakfast, only to be at the airport too early and then spend hours standing around, bored and famished.

Breakfast is prepared daily on-site, and includes a wide variety of homemade baked goods including muffins, bagels and English muffins. Add some of the fresh fruit options,
