Planning your Super Bowl party
TOPIC: Lifestyles
6 January 2011
Whether you watch it for the game, for the multi-million dollar ads, or just as an excuse to hang out with friends, the Super Bowl is a major television event.

It may still be a while before the big day, but it is never too early to start planning for the perfect Super Bowl party.

Of course, the TV will be the supposed centre of attention for the duration of the game, but for many the really important action will take place in the kitchen. It is therefore only fair to see to it that the cook and anyone else spending time in the kitchen will be able to see the game, whether on the main television or on a satellite set in the kitchen.

But let’s forget about the game – that will take care of itself and everybody watches the same game. What makes or breaks a party is the food.

There are certain favourites that tend for form part of any Super Bowl party and far be it from mere mortals to decide that hot wings, nachos, hotdogs, sausage links, ribs and a variety of dips should not be on the menu this year.

Of course, the operative phrase is ‘finger food’ as it really helps with the washing up after.

Hot wings
A staple of any Super Bowl party, this recipe bakes them instead of frying them, as trying to fry wings while keeping one eye on the game can be hazardous to your health.

½ cup butter (melted)
½ cup red pepper sauce
¾ cup tomato sauce
1 ½ tablespoon chilli powder
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Split wings and discard tips
Bake wings for 45 minutes, or until cooked through and crispy
Combine melted butter, red pepper sauce, tomato sauce, chilli powder and cayenne pepper and blend together
Dip baked wings in sauce, shake off excess and return to baking sheet
Reduce oven temperature to 250 and bake for another 15 minutes

7 Layer dip
A classic dip for any party, it can be made in advance and refrigerated.

Ingredients:
1 can refried beans (16oz)
1 package taco seasoning mix (1 ¼ oz)
1 large tomato, seeded and chopped
1 cup guacamole
1 cup sour cream (room temperature)
1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 cup chopped green onions
1/4 cup chopped black olives

Directions:
Spread beans in bottom of 1qt serving dish
Layer diced tomatoes over beans
Mix seasoning into sour cream and layer over tomatoes, followed by the guacamole
Sprinkle over cheese, followed by green onion and olives
