Jennifer “Jen” Myatt was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia and now here she is in the Cayman Islands! It’s amazing how making a few connections and a bit of luck can take you to places you never expected to be. She has travelled from the cold Northeast to warmer Southern climes, and so far she ain’t complainin’.

Jen began in the service industry while she was still in school, working at a pool hall called Dooly’s in Sydney. At the age of 19 she moved to Halifax to seek other opportunities. She got a job at Pogue Fado Pub as a bartender, and although she had limited experience, it didn’t really matter in an establishment where the main drink of choice was draft beer or standard mixes. It wasn’t long before she was pulling a mean pint, and even perfecting her shamrock design in creamy heads of Guinness.

Jen worked at Pogue Fado for three years and really loved it. There are lots of universities in Halifax so there was always a social crowd with which to mingle whilst she hustled behind the bar. In 2006 one of the owners’ wives mentioned that she had a friend in the Cayman Islands who needed a bartender – would Jen be interested? I guess so, ‘cos she moved out here in April 2006 to join the staff at Stingers Bar on West Bay Road.

Jen quickly made friends and settled into her new life in Grand Cayman with ease. It wasn’t until the latter part of 2009 that she felt a change might be in order, and so she accepted the offer to move to Abacus in the heart of Camana Bay. Since then she has been constantly on her feet in a popular bar and restaurant with a combination of regular clients and new visitors walking through the door every day.

Now in 2011, she is very happy to be staying exactly where she is. She has great bosses and she has never worked in a place where the staff members all get along so well, often hanging out on their days off.

If you need a romantic hangout, or just want some great drinks with friends, Abacus is the place to be on Valentine’s Day. Jen has designed a super special delicious Bacardi beverage that is sure to put the love in your heart!
