A bit of Southern bite

When thinking about places in the US that have a food culture all their own, Louisiana, and in particular New Orleans, springs to mind. The food has to have a bit of a kick to it – bland just won’t do. So no wonder that the spice that has put Cajun cooking and Louisiana cuisine on the map has also made it into the most famous chain of restaurants to make its way out of the south and onto the global stage - Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen.

Although the restaurant is known primarily for its fried chicken (and with good reason) there are many other items on the menu well worth exploring, including an ever changing selection of specials that can include anything from garlic shrimp to crawfish. However, regardless of how popular the items are, it is a case of here today, gone tomorrow, making it well worth paying regular visits to the restaurant at its Eastern Avenue location. The building certainly stands out with its French Quarter-in-spired architecture.

But back to the chicken. The cooking process used at the restaurant allows the chicken to cook in its own juices, rather than allowing the cooking oil to penetrate during frying. The process starts with pieces of chicken marinated for 12 hours, then covered in cold batter and lowered into an open fryer. The cold batter creates a thermal barrier, which prevents the shortening from getting into the chicken. The chicken is available in spicy and mild, although as a fan of all things spicy, I can certainly recommend the spicy. Also of interest is that Popeyes serves whole chicken breasts, rather than splitting each breast.

But it’s not all about the chicken, as the sides are also rather unique – from red beans and rice, full corn on the cob, their legendary biscuits and mash with gravy made on site. Even the French fries are different, with signature battered French fries. When it comes to the fish, the restaurant serves up catfish, in keeping with its Louisiana roots. Add in some healthy salads, as well as chicken sandwiches, and you have a selection sure to suit any palate. In short, the restaurant prides itself on delivering real food fast, rather than just fast food.

The menu is also being adapted for the local palate, with additional sides like fried plantain, local rice and beans and even fried okra. The staff are also justifiably proud of the signature ice tea, which is an essential accompaniment to a meal, especially should you decide to indulge in something a little more spicy.

The company can also do catering for parties and events and features a drive through for those who need their spice in a hurry. WH
