Light up the Night

With a variety of run/walk events on Island, coming up with a unique concept can be difficult. However, the Breast Cancer Foundation will be doing something new on Saturday 19 March when it hosts the Light up the Night Full Moon Walk. The event will start from Lone Star Bar and Grill on West Bay Road and see participants walk down to the beach, where they will take part in a two mile walk along the powdery soft sands of Seven Mile Beach.

“The walk aims to raise Breast Cancer Awareness outside of October’s Breast Cancer Month activities, to raise funds for the project supported by the foundation and to promote a healthy lifestyle,” says Kim Lund, director of the Breast Cancer Foundation.

“One of the ways to reduce your chance of having breast cancer is an active lifestyle. Therefore a walk was the obvious choice as everyone can join in. We realised that a walk is not a brand new idea and therefore put a twist on it by making it an evening beach walk,” says Janet Jarchow of the Breast Cancer Foundation.

After the walk there will be a live band at Lone Star, as well as a prize raffle for participants in the event.
Chrissie Tomlinson Memorial Hospital will provide a free mammogram to 20 women participating in the walk, while the entry fees will go towards funding the different programmes the foundation supports, including the financial assistance of breast cancer patients.

“We would like to encourage everyone to show their support and join the walk,” says James Bovell, director of the foundation.

The event is sponsored by the Breast Cancer Foundation, Chrissie Tomlinson Memorial Hospital, RE/MAX and the Caymanian Compass.
