The Cayman Islands have spawned an endless array of some of the best Disc Jockeys known to the Caribbean region.
Not least among these is DJ Alic, a man who needs no introduction to most who are even remotely aware of the Islands’ night scene.
The DJ has been performing it the Cayman Islands for over 19 years now and talked about how he came to the Cayman Islands from his native Jamaica all those years ago.
“I had been DJ’ing in Jamaica and making a name for myself for a little while during which time I had the privilege of meeting a popular DJ from Cayman named Jazzy B - God rest his soul. We became good friends and I began visiting the Cayman Islands shortly after that, as there were many night spots and not enough DJs.
“I’ll never forget, Jazzy B picked me up from the airport and took me to a place called Bayview. I began my career in the Cayman Islands right there not long after,” he joyfully recounts.
From there DJ Alic was virtually unstoppable and the mild mannered but determined DJ etched out a name and reputation for himself, which has stayed with him some two decades later.
“My parents loved music and I watched them and learned to use the turn tables. Eventually, I began selecting the music for the home,” he gleams.
DJ Alic is also known as one of the most versatile DJs on the Island and this is mostly evidenced in the vast spectrum of venues the DJ has and continues to play.
“A night at the Country and Western Bar is the true test of versatility for anyone simply because you have to play everything from Soca to Salsa and Meringue, Reggae, RnB and Country,” he says, adding that he loves to have just as much variety in the types of functions he plays.
“I will do any type of event that is required and weddings, graduations...”
Alic says he never envisioned a time when there would be no need to carry records and says he misses going into a crate, which he knew like the back of his hand and drawing on records, “a skill and discipline unto itself. I miss playing them yes, but I don’t miss carrying them,” he jokes.
Some of DJ Alic’s major influences, in particular, are Bob Marley, Soul Music and Motown. He says he has gained a great respect for what music can do and what it means to be a part of such a special fraternity.
“Music is life and life is music. Without the people, there would be no DJ Alic. I am forever grateful to the Lord, whom has blessed me with these abilities and put me where others may appreciate my offering,” he states.
