Happy Hour should be a time to unwind and put the day, or
even the entire week, behind you, and it is difficult to imagine a better place
to do this than overlooking the water as the sun sinks lower in the west. Every
day from 5pm to 7pm, Macabuca in West Bay is an ideal place to say farewell to
the day and kick back with a cold one.
For those who haven’t made the trip out West in a while,
Macabuca was refurbished last year, with a brand new bar top, new furniture and
a lick of paint to bring it right back to its former glory after a couple of
passing storms had taken their toll. Whether you take a seat at the bar or at
one of the many tables dotted around it, there really is no bad seat in the
house.
Although Matt Moore, the general manger, describes the food
at Macabuca as bar food of very high quality, it helps to remember that
Macabuca sits right behind one of Cayman’s most well regarded restaurants, the
Cracked Conch. This means that even though the menu at Macabuca may seem far
removed from that of the Cracked Conch, it is put together by Chef Gilbert, the
man behind the exquisite creations that flow from the kitchen at Cracked Conch.
So regardless of what you order, you can be sure it will be something special.
Although happy hour at Macabuca is an experience any day of
the week, with specials on beer, well drinks and wine, Mondays add a little
something extra, with the immensely popular all you can eat Caribbean barbecue.
No short cuts here – this is a proper spread, traditionally
prepared in an big ol’ oil drum barbecue, and features jerk chicken, grilled
mahi, ribs, potato salad, coleslaw... the list goes on and on.
And for just $15, it is the perfect excuse to jump in the
car and head out west – just another way to stretch that weekend feeling a
little bit further into the week.
Food is served from 11am to 10pm, so regardless of whether
you feel like an early lunch or a late evening snack, in fact anything either
side of happy hour, Macabuca is a great spot to just sit back and enjoy good
food, good company, and
unbeatable scenery.
