Sometimes you just want to kick back and play tourist for a bit. When that feeling strikes, taking a short trip out to Macabuca in West Bay is a good option.

A favourite spot with divers and snorkelers, who can enter the water right from the bar’s ironshore location, there is a laid-back vibe that is perfect for anyone wanting to just sit back and relax.

“Anybody can go off the shore and snorkel, and afterwards you can sit here in your bathing suit, that’s not a problem,” says Nina Nickchen of Macabuca.

The bar boasts a great mix of people as well, from the regular crowd of locals to visiting divers.

“Anybody can come here, families, younger people, older generation,” says Nina.

“It’s very local and we try to get local products and beer in here as well.”

According to Nina, their chef is also very keen on local products, which goes to explain why their signature dish, fish and chips, boasts and Ironshore Bock batter. And what could be more appropriate, considering the ironshore location of the bar.

Caybrew’s recent addition of White Tip Lager to the stable of beers is also a perfect fit for Macabuca. The more easy-drinking lager is a great summer beer, while the branding appeals to the divers and snorkelers who frequent the bar, especially due to the percentage of profits being donated to programmes to study and protect sharks in the Cayman Islands.

Caybrew’s environmental programmes are very important to Macabuca, says Nina.

“The good thing about Caybrew also is they recycle their bottles. . I think it is great they recycle, because it does not happen too often on the island,” she says.

Caybrew also recycles cans, as well as running numerous internal programme to make the whole operation as environmentally friendly as possible.

The company has even come out in support of Macabuca’s new initiative – Green Drinks.

“Once a month we have Green Drinks at Macabuca, which is an opportunity for people to meet and talk about recycling and how you can make those things better. Caybrew sponsored beer for that,” says Nina. WH
