Aaron's Dive Tipss
How did a nice kid from California end up working as a Dive Instructor in the Cayman Islands? Aaron Hunt seems to have made a habit of always residing in a place where he has easy access to the water, so I guess it was inevitable that he would end up making it a big part of his everyday life.
Aaron was born and raised in Sacramento with an early interest in Science. When he graduated from high school in 1992, he decided to join the Army and spent the next eight years initially stationed in Ft. Carson, and then relocated to Ft. Stewart in Georgia, training in M1A1 Abrams Battle Tanks.
Whilst in the Army he decided he would try his hand at university, and signed up for a Computer Science degree at Southern Tech. After three years he realised that he didn’t really need the full degree, and so completed other certifications in PC Repair and Network Administration instead.
In 2001 he left the Forces and went to work for Bell South as a phone operator with the hope of advancing into the networking side. It didn’t pan out, and so he flew back to California a year later to pursue a job in the computer industry there, installing and troubleshooting networks for small businesses.
Whilst re-familiarising himself with his home state, Aaron invested in two 90-gallon saltwater aquariums. Maintaining them was an expensive but fascinating hobby, and fuelled his interest in marine life. Living near the coastal areas of Monterey and Carmel put him in an excellent position to witness fishies in their native habitat, and so he went to a dive shop to start his Scuba Diving certifications.
The same shop needed some help, and with staff discounts thrown in, Aaron couldn’t resist. Two years later he had made it to Divemaster level and now was looking to tackle the Instructor course. He researched various islands and the classes they offered and chose Ash McKnight at the Cayman Diving College.
Aaron travelled to Grand Cayman in 2009, took the course, and worked with Resort Sports before moving to Sunset Divers earlier this year. Now he’s officially a Dive Instructor and the (underwater) world is his oyster!
He loves his job because the people he encounters on a daily basis are about as happy as they can get – on vacation and Scuba diving; some for the first time. He’s also pretty keen on Sunset Divers thanks to professional staff and an excellent international reputation. Where will Aaron go from here? Who knows in the far-off future, but for right now he’s happy to stay exactly where he is.
Why not stop by Sunset Divers and book your dive course or vacation with Aaron? He’s a California lad who went south for the winter and never went back. WH
