As a rule in most seashore geographical locations “Hi Tide” means the rise of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the moon and the sun. However on our islands Hi Tide is defined as an acoustic duo well known for their live performances as well as their recordings of classic covers and catchy contemporary original pop songs. And let’s not forget Shane Allenger and Sean Hennings’ incredible 14 year run at Decker’s, a one venue span which can be matched by few musicians in Cayman.
Hi Tide just released their tenth album –titled Hi Tide 4. The reason behind the conflicting numbers is that this is their fourth album with all original songs.
All the tunes on Hi Tide 4 were penned by Shane and Sean. With Shane’s effortless, smooth vocals and Sean’s melodic guitar this album can be described as an explosion of soothing pop sounds with a tropical twist. My personal favourite cut is I’ll Go Home, a mellifluous reggae that makes me homesick even though I haven’t gone anywhere. That song’s conga and keyboard intro to its sickly harmony ending can make your ears melt with sweetness.
Few of us here in Grand Cayman have the privilege of making a living out of writing and performing our songs, almost none of us (that I know of) have a degree in music theory, but we do have an understanding of how songs are built. This includes a basic perception of harmony, melody, and rhythm. That fusion is evident on every cut of this new 15 song album. Two of the songs, Something Wonderful and the first single, Reasons & Lies, were produced by the legendary Gardner Cole, who has recorded over 350 songs including eleven Billboard charting singles. He also wrote Madonna’s smash hit Open your Heart.
Some say Shane sings like an angel – but like “Jesus”?
We’ll see – don’t miss Shane starring as “Jesus” in the Cayman Drama Society’s production of Godspell, which will run at the Prospect Playhouse until 9 October. WH
