Originally a public celebration of the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on 17 October, 1810, it did not feature any beer or food stands at all, but a horse race. The Theresienwiese fairground or Wies’n is host to the largest people’s fair in the world with more than six million visitors during the two weeks. Wies’n is also what the locals call the festival. Cayman may be a far cry from Bavaria, in fact possibly as far a cry as one can get, yet the appreciation for a good brew and a sausage runs deep even here. Of course there is no better time of year to indulge than October, for even though the traditional Oktoberfest in Bavaria takes place primarily in September, over here in Cayman we do tend to take our time about things, so October will do just fine thanks.
And even though Lederhosen, Dirndls and oompah music might help to set the scene, don’t let the lack of any of those put you off enjoying a bit of Bavarian festivities.
As has become tradition on Grand Cayman, the big Oktoberfest celebrations will take place at The Wharf on 28 and 29 October. Due to the popularity of the event, Expect traditional dishes including bratwurst, Wiener schnitzel, sauerkraut, roasted pork, potato salad, and pretzels, as well as a wide selection of beers to celebrate the occasion.
“This is a chance to live the experience of a great authentic Bavarian food and drinking international beers from all around the world and meeting and seeing good friends,” says Wharf Manager Reno Mancini.
The deck of The Wharf might not be quite the size of the festival ground in Munich, but provides plenty of space for local revellers to get into the spirit of things and celebrate good food, good beer, and good company in a typical German fashion. WH
