It’s tough to miss Hammerheads Brew Pub and Grill when walking along the waterfront in George Town. After all, a big statue of a grinning hammerhead shark holding a pint of lager does tend to catch the attention.
As with many downtown establishments, Hammerheads does a roaring trade with tourists while the cruise ships are in town, but according to Eric Vincent, the bar manager, once the boats pull out of the harbour the venue has a very good local client base as well.
Its location downtown makes it a great spot to stop in for happy hour, and there are few spots more perfect for kicking back with a pint while watching the sunset.
Those who haven’t been down to Hammerheads in a while may also notice some changes. There have been extensive refurbishments, with new chairs, tables, and even a new bar top adding some extra sparkle.
As Eric puts it, you can still expect the same fun atmosphere, but dolled up a little bit.
However, it’s not all business as usually down at Hammerheads. Eric says that they are busy revamping their menu, and although he promises that all the old favourites will still be there, the new menu will also boast a much greater selection of local dishes, including whole snapper, oxtail and the like, bringing a taste of Cayman to visitors while also offering locals something other than the regular pub fare it has become well known for.
When it comes to signature drinks or dishes, Eric says that because of the very varied group of people who frequent Hammerheads, it is quite impossible to pick one favourite. In fact, he suggests that the best course of action would be a visit to Hammerheads to work your way through the menu and find what appeals to you.
“We’re really pretty versatile – it doesn’t matter whether you’re a dive instructor or a barrister, we make everyone feel welcome,” says Eric.
An added bonus with Hammerheads is the proximity of the fish market right next door. You can walk over to the fish market, buy whatever’s fresh, and then have it cooked and served up at Hammerheads.
Need something more to tempt you to visit? Hammerheads is also home to Cayman’s only locally distilled run, Seven Fathoms, so you can make a visit to the distillery part of your visit to Hammerheads.
Add to that the newly established Swanky Shack from where local entrepreneur and designer Luigi Moxam sells his One 345 range of clothing as well as a range of other items, and you should have at least a couple of good excuses for a visit. WH
